Hands

Our hands speak a language of their own. Most of the time we don’t notice it. Sometimes they say what words can’t, especially when speaking out isn’t safe or socially acceptable. I think it’s pretty incredible. So with this series, I wanted to reclaim and celebrate iconic hand gestures and configurations that have served as secret signals throughout queer history. I won’t say too much because I’m curious to see if you already know what they mean.

These pieces were designed to be simultaneously discreet and loud. Their symbolism is visible only to those who understand, while appearing to others as elegant renderings of human hands. Like modern-day versions of the hanky code, they offer people a way to both express identity and connect with others in the know—without saying a word.
